Presentation

The Fort Saint Pierre, now the Théâtre de la Mer, stages shows in the summer.

Following an attempted invasion by the English in 1710, a succession of fortifications were installed to protect the city. Built between 1743 and 1746 on the tip of the cape overlooking the cliffs, the fort is made up of seven platforms equipped with batteries of cannons and its job was to protect the Saint Louis fort (no longer in existence) located at the end of the jetty.

It was later used as a barracks and a prison during the Algerian conquest, then as a military hospital annexe. Badly damaged by German raids in 1944, the inside of the buildings threatened to fall into ruin. It was rebuilt in 1960 as the Théâtre de la Mer or Théâtre Jean Vilar, at the instigation of the actor Jean Duchamps.
